Grooming and Brushing When grooming and brushing for the first time, keep the time spent on your dog short. As your dog gets more confortable with grooming, extend the time out a little longer. Make sure and use the correct brush for your dog's coat. There are metal combs, bristle brushes, slicker brushes, and rubber brushes. You should occasionally clip your dog's coat to prevent tangles.

Washing: Bath Time! Make sure you wash your dog regularly. It is a myth that shampooing dries out your dog's coat. Dog shampoos are made from ingredients that are kind to both skin and coat. Most people do not wash their dogs enough. Washing your dog removes any bugs, plants, seeds, dirt, or anything else caught in your dog's coat, out. Plus, it makes that nasty "doggy" smell, go away!

Bathing Your Dog
1. Brush your dog before bathing to remove any tangles in your dog's coat. Make sure that there is a non-slip mat in the tup, because you don't want your dog to slip in the tub! Make sure the water you are using isn't cold, but isn't hot. And finally, for normal washing use a no-tears baby shampoo.
2. Apply the shampoo all over your dog and then rinse thouroughly. Make sure you rinse extra good underneath the legs and tail. If you feel as if the coat is still dirty or still see debris in the coat, repeat the washing process until the entire coat is clean.
3. Make sure you have plenty towels ready! Dog's like to shake their coats dry and it won't be very funny when you have to clean the bathroom! For dog's with longer hair, a blow dryer is a quick and effective way to dry your dog's coat. Make sure the temperature is low and so is the "volume" or intensity.
