Preparing the for Your New Family MemberNaming Your Dog
The name you choose for your dog says a lot about your dog. Before you pick a name, spend some time with your puppy to see his/her personality. You don't want to name a rambunctious puppy Socks or a calm puppy Rowdy! Prepare for the Arrival Before you bring the puppy into your home, investigate the puppy's indoor and outdoor environment. Make sure there is no holes in the fence the puppy could escape from and make sure there are no chords you puppy could chew or small objects he could swallow. |
Meeting the Family
When your puppy comes home for the first time, keep human activity to a low level. You want to give your puppy time to investigate his new surroundings before you go and love on him a lot. He need's his space, as this is the first time he has left his mother and littermates. Settling In For some dogs, moving into a new home is very stressful. They can't get used to the fact that they are not with their mom and brothers and sisters anymore. Continue to feed your dog the food the breeder fed and gradually switch food. Your puppy might have a slight case of the runs only because he/she is nervous. Just remember to apoligize to your neighbors about any of the noise your puppy makes for the first few days or weeks. Your puppy isn't used to sleeping in a crate! He is used to sleeping snuggled up next to his mom. |
